Edelweiss CEO’s post in response to Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour week remark is viral

Recently, Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, sparked a heated debate online when he suggested that Indian youth should work 70 hours per week to enhance the country’s productivity and economy. His comments were met with mixed reactions, with some, including JSW Chairman Sajjan Jindal, endorsing the idea, while others raised concerns about the potential health implications of such long working hours.

In response to this controversy, Radhika Gupta, CEO and Managing Director of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, pointed out that Indian women have been working more than 70 hours per week for years, juggling their professional responsibilities with household chores and child-rearing. However, she noted, this has largely gone unnoticed and undebated.

Gupta took to social media platform X to express her views. “Between offices and homes, many Indian women have been working many more than seventy-hour weeks to build India (through our work) and the next generation of Indians (our children). For years and decades. With a smile, and without a demand for overtime. Funnily, no one has debated about us on Twitter,” she wrote.

Her post quickly gained a lot of traction. Many users agreed with Gupta’s sentiments, acknowledging the tireless dedication of Indian women and calling for greater recognition of their efforts.

“Very much agree… I’m married to one such lady. She has been managing all these for the last 18+ years when we had our son. The best employee at work, and best at everything, however, it does take a toll on her at times but she comes back with rigour. I’m privileged,” a user wrote.

“Also the men could work for more than 8 hours a day coz the mother or wife made their life stress-free when they were back home. With both genders working with the same passion now this is no longer easy. So if u get 100 hours from a working couple per week then that should be good,” another user wrote.

Narayana Murthy’s comments were made during an appearance on the first episode of 3one4 Capital’s podcast ‘The Record’, hosted by former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai. In addition to discussing work culture, Murthy also spoke about nation-building, technology, and his company Infosys.
