Raj Thackeray meets Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde over toll hike issue

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday met Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to discuss the recent hike in toll rates that his party workers have been protesting.

The issue has flared up after a hike in toll rates from October 1. MNS leader Avinash Jadhav went on an indefinite fast in Thane to protest against the hike.

The MNS has said that its workers will gather at every toll booth and ensure that four, three and two-wheelers will not be charged tolls. They threatened to set ablaze toll plazas if they were stopped.

“We had a detailed discussion with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the concerned ministers and all the officials. A meeting is scheduled for 8 am tomorrow at my house to come to a decision. I will hold a press conference at 10 am to tell you what has been decided after that meeting (with Shinde),” Thackeray told reporters.

He said the Chief Minister gave a positive response to the toll hike issue.

According to sources, a senior official involved in the hike of toll rates was pulled up by Thackeray and Shinde over the lack of proper facilities on the highway.

On October 9, Thackeray said none of the previous governments had been able to fulfil their promises of making Maharashtra toll-free. He alleged that toll booths served as a source of income for many politicians.

Thackeray is also said to have raised the issue of housing for policemen in the state in his meeting with Shinde. According to MNS leaders, the Chief Minister has given a positive response to it.
