US Senators rushed to bomb shelters in Israel to wait out Hamas rocket attack

A delegation of US Senators were rushed to a bomb shelter on Sunday after a rocket siren was sounded in Tel Aviv, Israel, amid the country’s ongoing war with the Hamas terrorist group. The delegation comprised US Senators Chuck Schumer, Mitt Romney, Bill Cassidy, Jacky Rosen, and Mark Kelly.

Schumer, who is leading the delegation on their trip to strife-torn Israel, took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the incident. He posted a picture of the delegation inside what looked like a bunker. “While in Tel Aviv today, our delegation was rushed to a shelter to wait out rockets sent by Hamas. It shows you what Israelis have to go through. We must provide Israel with the support required to defend itself,” the Senate majority leader’s post read.

The US Senators’ delegation has travelled to Israel to show solidarity after last weekend’s attack by Hamas killed more than 1,300 Israelis, including 29 Americans.

Earlier in the day, Schumer posted pictures of the delegation having meetings with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and other leaders of the country. Later, he reiterated the US’s support for Israel via a post on X.

“I’m leading a bipartisan Senate delegation to Israel to show America’s unrelenting support. We’re having good, productive meetings with Israeli leaders. I’ll lead the effort in the US Senate to provide Israel with the support required to defend itself from this monstrous attack,” Schumer wrote on the microblogging site.

The devastating fight between Israel and Hamas terrorist group has so far claimed more than 3,000 lives on both sides.

US President Joe Biden, who had earlier condemned the Hamas attack, reiterated his country’s backing for Israel, while also stressing the need for humanitarian aid for Palestinians.

On Sunday, he spoke to Palestinian Authority President Abbas and condemned Hamas attack, but also reiterated that the terrorist group does not define Palestinians’ “right to dignity and self-determination”. Biden wrote that he has assured Abbas of working with partners in Gaza to ensure “humanitarian supplies reach civilians” in the region and the conflict can be stopped from escalating.
